AAP's crushing defeat in Chandigarh's mayoral election, BJP's Anup Gupta will be the new mayor

Like the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, there was a direct contest between the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. BJP's Anup Gupta will be the new mayor of Chandigarh.

New Delhi: It became clear today who will be the new mayor of Chandigarh. BJP has swept the Chandigarh Mayor elections. BJP has got 15 votes, while Aam Aadmi Party has got 14 votes.


Like the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, there was a direct contest between the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. BJP's Anup Gupta will be the new mayor of Chandigarh.


Anoop Gupta of the BJP has defeated Jasbir Singh Laddy of the Aam Aadmi Party. Jasbir Singh got 14 votes, while Anoop Gupta got 15 votes. A total of 29 votes were cast. No cross-voting took place.


No candidate was fielded from Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal in this election. Congress has 6 councillors, while Shiromani Akali Dal has one councillor.


MPs of Chandigarh also vote

In December 2021, the Aam Aadmi Party emerged as the largest party in the municipal elections and won 14 of its councillors. BJP won 12 councillors, while Congress won 8 and Shiromani Akali won 1 councillor.


Congress councillor Harpreet Kaur Babla joined the BJP after the elections. In June 2021, Congress councillor Gurcharanjit Singh Kala also joined BJP. Now both the AAP and the BJP have 14 councillors, while Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher is also a member of the municipal corporation and casts her vote.
