Biplab Deb's resignation: BJP CM in Tripura leave the post 1 year before the elections

Biplab Deb's resignation comes after similar exits by party chief ministers in Uttarakhand, Karnataka and Gujarat. Sources said Deb's exit was necessitated after the BJP's top leadership received adverse reports about dissatisfaction in the administration and ranks.

New Delhi: With the resignation of Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to replace another chief minister ahead of next year's assembly elections in the state. Biplab Kumar Deb announced on Saturday evening that he has submitted his resignation to Governor SN Arya. Deb had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda in the national capital on Thursday.

Deb's resignation comes at a time when there are rumours of infighting in the Tripura unit of the BJP. Elections to the 60-seat assembly of Tripura are due next year. Biplab Deb is likely to be included in the outfit and a new chief minister is likely to be elected at the party's legislature party meeting later in the day.

According to sources, Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav and senior leader and party's national general secretary Vinod Tawde have been made central observers for the selection of the new leader. Both the leaders are currently in Agartala and will attend the legislature party meeting. Apart from these two leaders, BJP MP and the in-charge of Tripura Vinod Sonkar will also be present in this meeting.

BJP's ally party also had displeasure with Deb

The Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), an ally of the BJP in Tripura, had also raised its objections about Deb to the central leadership. A year before the elections, the discord in the IPFT over the reorganization of the state committee has shaken the politics of Tripura. It is being said that Pradyut Kishor Deb Burman of TIPRA Moth is also eyeing tribal seats.

Biplab was the first CM of BJP in Tripura

Biplab Deb was sworn in as the first chief minister of the BJP in Tripura after the party came to power in 2018. In the 2018 assembly elections, the BJP overthrew the CPI(M) government that ruled the state for more than two decades.
