Morbi bridge accident: Gujarat govt will give additional compensation of Rs 10 lakh to each family

After taking cognizance of the High Court on the Morbi bridge accident, the state government has filed an affidavit. The state government said that it would give a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of those who died. 1 lakh rupees will be given to the injured.

New Delhi: The Gujarat government will provide additional financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of those who died in the Morbi bridge accident. The state government has given information in this regard in an affidavit filed before the High Court on Monday.


The state government has said in its affidavit that total compensation of Rs 10 lakh will be given to the next of kin of each of the deceased who lost their lives in the bridge collapse incident. Along with this, those who are injured in this accident will be given a grant of one lakh rupees. Morbi Municipality and the State Government have filed affidavits before the High Court.


There was a huge loss of life in the Morbi bridge collapse incident in October before the Gujarat assembly elections. A total of 134 people lost their lives due to the collapse of a century-old suspension bridge in the Machchu river of Morbi, Gujarat.


The Gujarat High Court took suo moto cognizance of the Morbi accident on November 7 and issued notices to the officials including the Home Department and sought a report within a week. The High Court had said 'we expect strict action from the state government'.


At the same time, the Supreme Court had said that the incident of Morbi Bridge was a 'colossal tragedy. After this, the state government said that additional compensation would be given to the families of each of the deceased. The state government said in an affidavit filed before the High Court on Monday that it would pay a total compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of each of the deceased.
