BJP supports NPP in Meghalaya, CM Conrad Sangma resigns, stakes claim to form new government

Regarding the claim of forming the government before resigning, Conrad Sangma said, BJP has given us its support. We are going to meet the governor. We would request him to invite the National People's Party to form the government.

New Delhi: The National People's Party (NPP) has emerged as the single largest party by winning 26 seats after the Meghalaya Assembly election results are out. Meanwhile, NPP chief and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Friday submitted his resignation to the governor and staked a claim to form a new government.


We have numbers to form government: Sangma

On staking claim to form the government before resigning, Conrad Sangma said, "BJP has given us its support. We are going to meet the governor. We will request him to invite the National People's Party to form the government." He said that BJP and other political parties have extended their support. We have the numbers to form the government.


PM Modi can attend the swearing-in ceremony

Conrad Sangma said that we have requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to attend the swearing-in ceremony. He said that we are waiting for confirmation from the Prime Minister's Office. If PM Modi will attend this function, then the date of the program will be decided accordingly.


There was violence at various places, but the situation is under control: Sangamma

Regarding the violence during voting in Meghalaya, Sangamma said, "It is unfortunate. This should not have happened. There was violence in places, but the situation is under control. I urge people and all political parties are over and violence is not the way forward and should not indulge in any kind of violence."


NPP has 26 seats and BJP has 2 seats

Significantly, after the elections held on 59 seats in Meghalaya, the majority mark to form the government is 30. NPP has 26 seats and with the support of the BJP, the total number of seats is 28. BJP has won 2 seats in Meghalaya. Konrad Sangma needs two more seats to form the government. On this, Conrad Sangma said that BJP and other parties have given their support. He said that we will soon tell everyone which parties supported us.
