Congress got a non-Gandhi president after 2 decades, Mallikarjun Kharge defeated Tharoor for post

Mallikarjun Kharge has won the election for the post of Congress President by securing 7897 votes. While Shashi Tharoor got around 1000 votes and 416 votes were rejected.

New Delhi: Mallikarjun Kharge has won the election for the post of Congress President by securing 7897 votes. While Shashi Tharoor got around 1000 votes and 416 votes were rejected. In this way, Kharge got 8 times more votes than Tharoor.


Drums are being played at the Congress headquarters in the joy of Mallikarjun Kharge becoming the new National President of the Congress. People were seen celebrating from outside the AICC office in Delhi.


Congress Presidential candidate Shashi Tharoor has issued a statement congratulating the newly elected President of Congress Mallikarjun Kharge. He said that 'I believe that the revival of our party has really started today.'

It is believed that Tharoor has gone to congratulate Kharge on becoming the Congress President. Tharoor said in a statement that "the final verdict was in favour of Kharge". I congratulate Mallikarjun Kharge for his victory in this election.


The counting of votes at the Congress party headquarters began at 10.20 am on Wednesday, a little after the scheduled time of 10 am. On this occasion MP Karti Chidambaram, the proposer of Presidential candidate Shashi Tharoor and some other election agents were present. MP Syed Nasir Hussain and some other leaders were present from Kharge's side.
