New sports policy 2023 approved in UP, players will get health insurance of 5 lakhs

The Yogi government of UP has approved the new sports policy 2023. After its implementation, the players will be greatly benefited. The government will give health insurance of 5 lakhs to all the registered players.

New Delhi: With an aim to boost sports culture in the state and encourage budding athletes to pursue their dreams, the Uttar Pradesh cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday approved the New Sports Policy, 2023. Under the new sports policy, special attention has to be given to many aspects from the physical fitness of the player to training. Along with this, various provisions have been made to support the development of new institutions by connecting schools, colleges and private academies with sports.


Apart from the sports policy, the cabinet also approved some other proposals related to sports. Agreed to the proposal to activate various committees for organizing Khelo India University Games. The meeting also decided to frame a policy for construction, operation and management of stadiums and open gyms in rural areas to provide necessary facilities to the promising sportspersons in rural areas and help them win laurels for the state and the country. What are the provisions in the new sports policy?

The new policy promises financial support for various sports federations and sports academies. Academies and sports organizations with limited resources will get its benefit. These federations and academies will be able to expand their infrastructure and training facilities with the financial support of the government, which will lend itself to producing top athletes.


Uttar Pradesh government will adopt PPP (Public Private Partnership) model. 14 centers will be set up in the state, each centred around a particular sport. It is proposed to set them up on the PPP model. The new sports policy also includes information on coaches and mapping of various sports facilities.


The New Sports Policy 2023 has a provision to set up State Sports Authority on the lines of the Sports Authority of India (SAI). In addition, the State shall set up a State Sports Development Fund. Weak players, associations or academies will get help through this fund.


Five High-Performance Centers will be set up in the state where high-performing athletes will be provided training facilities for better physical fitness. The government will also provide treatment to the players.


5 lakh health insurance for registered players

The Uttar Pradesh government will also provide financial assistance to the budding athletes. The government has also included its provisions in its new sports policy. Each registered player will get health insurance coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh from the state government. Along with this, the state government will also provide funds from the Eklavya Sports Fund for the treatment of injuries suffered by the players during the competitions. Many players decide to retire or leave the sport at the peak of their careers due to financial hardship or poor medical care. The government will extend a helping hand to such players under its new sports policy.


Players will get training in three categories

The first category will include grassroots (grassroots) players who need coaching at the initial level.


The second category will focus on sportsperson development, wherein talented sportspersons will be identified and given necessary training as part of an action plan to help them become future sportspersons.


The third category is elite sportspersons – established sportspersons who represent the state in various sports. Such players will be motivated to perform better at national and international level.


Other notable aspects of the new sports policy

  • A sports centre will be set up in each district.

  • Special attention will be given to women and para-sports.

  • Priority will be given to the development of sports facilities in rural areas.

  • Local and indigenous sports will be promoted.

  • The sports industry will be promoted in the state.

  • Keeping in view the possibilities of sports tourism, efforts will be made in this area as well.

  • Provision has also been made to promote e-sports in the state.

  • Better facilities like a fitness expert, dietician will be provided in the hostels.

  • A committee of international players will be formed for admission to hostels.

  • Schools will be encouraged to start sports nurseries or academies for the development of various sports.

  • A committee will be formed for Khelo India University Games
